With the expansion of craft cans, we get a new type of finish for cans. If the industry had us accustomed to cans with a homogeneous look, with a print on the same metal -sometimes better than in others-, the world of craft beer and its inexhaustible thirst for new daily recipes has brought us a new element that obviously seeks to cheapen costs.

An element, the label, that in some cases is very well integrated with the container, playing with the color of the can to create a uniform image. Most of the time, these well-made attachments are just a simple piece of thin plastic, which create a very acceptable fiction that nothing has changed. Surely many consumers will not have noticed they were not drinking from a strictly standard can.

But then there are some precarious integrations, mostly represented by cans with labels like those that could be glued to a bottle according to the standard of presentation, which give a beer a look with different degrees of amateurism -or outrageous shabbiness- depending on each case. A blessing for label collectors; an attack against beer dignity.

Believe me, today everything is logged and can be easily pulled from any library, even for less widespread things: the civilization of the future will devastatingly disapprove such occurrence, showing no mercy for those responsible. I can only think of a mitigating circumstance: it is a real pain to find cans in certain markets -such as ours-, even more for small orders. Maybe, for now, some could be exonerated.

It is high time the RoundUp was posted. I was asked for a little additional time, but I think 2 weeks is more than enough, so here we go with the brief summary of each of the contributions posted by beer bloggers from all around the globe. Before that, I just wanted to express my gratitude to every article published. It has given me a fantastic view on how Beer Festivals are lived by beer enthusiasts in many different countries. So the main prospect why I wanted to host the 96th Session has been satisfied. A priori one could have easily predicted that drinkers from countries with a time-honoured brewing tradition would be less excited than the ones living in places that until recently had almost no beer offer at all. But borrowing Stan's words " context always matters ", and it has been a great occasion to learn about different cultures and individual thoughts.

Pilot Plant

The shiny Mahou factory, in Alovera. I suppose it is not hard to guess that the great brewers do not produce their new recipes with their usual equipment. One of the things I saw from afar, which was not much emphasised during my visit to the facilities of Damm back in 2011, was a 10 Hl microbrewing plant - so huge at that time - in which they produced experimental batches for the development of recipes. I asked about that small facility, but it was far from the elevated catwalk through which the whole visiting group was moving , and I got little information about it. It was not until December 2016 that I was able to get my nose into a similar facility of another large Iberian brewing holding, such as Mahou-San Miguel (MSM). “Ater the visit to the Pilot Plant, I understood that Nómada are still gypsy brewers”

Europa Press published yesterday the piece of news that had been rumoured for the last weeks among people in the scene: Heineken acquires 51% of Madrid-based La Cibeles brewery . Founded by David Castro in 2010, the year in which the microbrewing scene in Madrid was almost identical to that of the late 90s in Barcelona, with little more than imported beer as an alternative to the major national brands, La Cibeles soon achieved notoriety and was a source of excitement for the few beer enthusiasts with concerns beyond the eternal cañita de Mahou .
